It is not uncommon for finances to cause stress. In particular, a lack of ongoing financial margin seems to be a pain point. There have been a few times in my life I have felt this stress myself- one being very recent. I am not a licensed therapist but below are a few things I find helpful.

Handling Financial Stress

  1. Identify - Recognize what it is that is causing the stress. Sometimes I am just in a bad mood and don't take the time to slow down and recognize why I am in a bad mood.

  2. Pray - God is our ultimate provider. Read through the latter part of Matthew 6 and Philippians 4. We can be content and full of hope regardless of the situation.

  3. Plan - Take a practical look at where things are, what is causing the stress, and steps to move forward. Just having a plan of how to move forward will alleviate a great amount of stress.

  4. Communicate - If you are married, communicate with your spouse. Confess that you are stressed about money and pray together to craft the plan to move forward. Quick note- don't speak too much. It is easy for this to become a blame game. Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry (James 1:19).

  5. Seek Help - Recognize when you do need to get professional guidance from either a financial perspective or from a licensed therapist.

Keep moving forward. Finances do not have to be stressful.
